Standing desks are worth considering for most desk-based roles, mainly because they make it easier to break up long sitting stretches. Before buying an electric standing desk, check five things: the load capacity against your full setup, the height range for your shortest and tallest user, how many height presets the controller saves, the desktop size, and what the warranty covers. At U Office, the electric adjustable desks we list differ on most of these, so the table below shows the ranges.
What the Research Says About Sit-Stand Desks
The evidence for standing desks is about sitting time. A small 2018 University of Cambridge feasibility study, in which 20 office employees were randomised, found that sit-stand desks reduced workplace sitting time by 94 minutes a day on average, with a wide range of plausible results (about 18 to 171 minutes). It was designed to test whether a larger trial was feasible, not to prove health benefits.
Ninety four minutes a day adds up to nearly eight hours less sitting across a five day week. That does not mean standing all day is the goal, and it is not a substitute for medical advice about any existing back or health condition.
Specs That Separate One Electric Standing Desk From Another
The table below shows what the electric adjustable desks we list state for each of the five checks. Specs differ even between models in the same range, so confirm them on the exact product page.
| Feature to check | Why it matters | Range listed in our electric adjustable desks |
| Load capacity | Must cover monitor, PC and accessories combined | 80 kg to 150 kg, depending on the model |
| Height range | Should suit your shortest and tallest regular user | Listed ranges include 720 to 1150 mm, 740 to 1200 mm and 620 to 1200 mm |
| Memory presets | Useful for any desk shared by more than one person | 3 presets with an LED display, listed on most models |
| Desktop size | Must fit your equipment and your room | 1.0 m to 1.6 m, depending on the model |
| Warranty | Shows what is covered and for how long | Two years against mechanism on most models; one dual motor model also lists motor cover |
Load capacity shows the biggest gap. The U-832 dual motor desk lists 150 kg, almost double the 80 kg listed for the entry models, so a desk that suits a laptop may not suit a desktop PC with two monitors. Most models also list two cable holes or grommets for wire management.
Our electric adjustable desks are listed together, and each product page shows that model’s load capacity, height range and presets.
Using a Standing Desk Once You Have One
A 2018 laboratory study of 25 overweight and obese adults compared a day of prolonged sitting with a day of alternating sitting and standing every 30 minutes, across simulated eight hour workdays. The researchers concluded that sit-stand desks may reduce acute sleepiness, physical fatigue and back discomfort, but lower-leg discomfort may increase. It measured a single day, so it says little about long-term effects.
Because lower-leg discomfort may increase, build up standing time gradually and sit down before your legs tire. A desk with saved height presets makes this easier, since switching position takes a single button press.
Warranty, Delivery and Installation
Before ordering, read the warranty line on the product page of the exact desk, since cover differs by model. Most of the electric adjustable desks we list carry two years against the mechanism, and the U-866 dual motor desk also lists motor cover.
Check your room measurements and the desk’s height range on the product page before ordering, since we don’t accept returns once a desk is sold.
Free delivery applies to qualifying orders delivered to lift or ground-level locations, and installation of height adjustable desks carries a per-unit fee shown on the product page. Delivery times vary by model and tabletop size, and some listings show a longer lead time, so check the product page before you plan around a date. The full terms are in our delivery and installation details and our warranty terms.
Shop Now with two numbers in hand: the weight of everything that will sit on the desk, and the height of your tallest user. Each product page lists both, so you can rule desks out quickly.
